| What is foster care?
Foster
care with Greene County Children Services Board is the full-time
temporary care of children birth to 18 years of age. The children
are cared for in a family foster home that has been certified
according to the guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Job and
Family Services. Children who cannot stay in their own home due to
serious family problems and do not have a suitable relative
available to provide for them are placed in foster care. These
children may have been victims of abuse or neglect or may lack
adequate care from their parents through no fault of their own.
Foster care is a way to provide for children on a full time
temporary basis.
How do children
come under the care of the agency?
If
children cannot remain safely within their own home, the agency will
work with the family to develop a temporary, safe living
arrangement. If this is not possible, the agency may contact the
Greene County Juvenile Court to ask for removal of the children from
the home.
Some families
voluntarily seek help from Greene County Children Services Board and
ask that a foster home be provided for their children until their
family crisis is over. The rules affecting children coming into
foster care are set and monitored by the federal and state laws.
What behaviors can
be expected from foster or adoptive children?
There
are many types of behaviors as there are children. Some children may
be withdrawn and hardly say anything. Others may be loud and appear
upset.
Because of the varied backgrounds and developmental stages the
children each have created their own way of coping with the removal
from their primary family. Trauma caused by the separation itself
cannot be underestimated.
What is adoption?
Adoption is a
permanent legal process which places a child with an adoptive family
who will provide a safe and nurturing home for that child.
Who are the
children waiting for adoption?
Currently
there are children in the permanent custody of Greene County
Children Services Board who are waiting for a family- a permanent
home.
Most of the children are between the ages of 6 and 13 years of age,
but older children need a forever family too! Some children are part
of a sibling group who want to be adopted together. Many face
physical, mental, emotional or educational challenges. |
